Question

How do I create a more secure password and keep my password safe?

Answer

As a student or employee at Santa Monica College, you will be using a variety of technology resources. Please use the following password security tips to keep your account safe from possible threats:

  • Never share your password with anyone.
  • Update your password at least annually. Instructions to change your password, are here.
    • Create a complex password that you can remember and is unique to you.
    • Passwords must be 12 to 32 characters long, including at least one uppercase and one lowercase letter, and at least one number.
    • Passphrases are recommended when possible. For example Iwillgraduatein2022!
    • Test the strength of your password using a utility like this one.
  • Create different passwords for different applications and websites. Use a password manager such as LastPass or 1Password to help manage your vault of passwords in one place. Protect these password vaults with multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • Don't forget to log out! Leaving your account open is just as dangerous as providing your password. Take time to make sure you are fully logged out of all online applications and browsers. If you're in a computer lab or the office and need to step away for a moment, you can lock your PC using the Windows key + L.
